Imani – ‘Imani’ is a variant of the Arabic name, Iman. It means faith, belief.

Such a powerful African woman. This painting gives the viewer a glimpse into her —the battles she fights, both within herself and those that the world and society bring about. Imani is soft and powerful, passionate and cold, all at the same time. This is one of my favourite portraits. I love the colours, the brushstrokes and the piercing eyes. The East African women I met when I lived there often emanated an intangible quality – strong, proud but humble, honest.
