This fascination with painting animals is enduring – each one has its own unique shape, character, form. The challenge is to capture an honest rendition of the physical being, while successfully portraying something of its character. Without using photorealism, I like the animal to seem real, as if it can walk off the canvas.

I grew up in the heart of the English countryside, with very little access to television or companionship. When I wasn’t outside, riding horses and spending time with animals, time indoors was spent reading or being creative. As a result, painting animals has been a natural development and, in the studio, there are usually one or two animal paintings in progress.
