Every face tells a story, young or old, and it’s incredible how each one is different! When painting portraits, I’m particularly interested in capturing the essence of a person, their spirit, an emotion, a moment uniquely theirs. The aim is to encapsulate and reflect the person, at a given moment.

The style of painting is not about re-creating a photographic image but bringing a painting alive with an original, vibrant likeness of the individual. I try and reflect on the words of Khalil Gibran, ‘Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart’. Through painting the physical surface of a face, the paint reveals the ‘heart’, the inner self.

My fascination with painting people does not stop with portraits. A collection of dance paintings is now in progress, where I hope to capture the drama and movement of dancers.

The painting technique used involves applying layers of bold, abstract colour, with big, flat brushes. This creates an energy on the surface of the canvas and smaller brushes are only used for some final details.
