The Maasai are pastoralists, moving from place to place, grazing their cattle. They have resisted the urging of the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. However, in Tanzania, many have moved to more populated areas and now live a more ‘modern’ lifestyle, working as guards for ex-pats or making money from tourism. The reference photo for this painting was taken in the Zanzibar islands where my friend and I met a really friendly family of Maasai – this guy was one of them.
