I love these birds, all petrol colours and a flash of orange beak. The blackbird’s melodious, distinctive song is mentioned in the poem Adlestrop by Edward Thomas:

And for that minute a blackbird sang

Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds

Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

(I happened to be living in Gloucestershire when I painted this and there were lots of blackbirds outside the studio!)
