The city of Granada sits in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between the towering peaks and the Mediterranean coast. This whole area of Andalusia is steeped in a rich history. The Alhambra Palace, seen on the left of the painting, is one of the most renowned buildings of historic Islamic legacy. In the winding streets of the Albayzín (also seen in the painting) you can see stunning Moorish and Morisco architecture too. Nowadays, a rich mescla of people live and work in the city, creating a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. If you have the opportunity to visit, it’s worth it!

The shape of the canvas lends itself to this landscape – reminding the viewer of a panoramic photo. The colours are abstract, creating drama and atmosphere. The details lead the viewer into the painting, through the city and out to the mountains beyond.
